Axiom AI agents formalize a 15,000-page math proof in 24 days
Why it matters
Axiom Math says it is releasing the first complete computer-checked proof of the Classification of Finite Simple Groups (CFSG), formalized in the Lean proof assistant. The original proof, which Axiom calls the longest in the history of mathematics, spans roughly 15,000 pages in more than 500 articles by about 100 mathematicians. Over 24 days, Axiom's engineers and mathematicians directed swarms of dozens of AI agents that produced about 43.1 million lines of Lean code. The work surfaced 34 noteworthy deviations from the published record, and AxiomProver proved a new group theory result to reroute the Unbalanced Group Theorem step. Group theorists from the original work, including Richard Lyons and Ronald Solomon, were consulted, and the proof is public on GitHub.
