OpenAI says its AI disproved the Exponential Time Hypothesis

Why it matters

OpenAI says its AI found a disproof of the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), a long-standing conjecture about how hard Boolean satisfiability is that was widely believed true and used in hundreds of papers; it says the disproof was found on 16 October and formalized in the Lean proof checker on 17 October. A group led by Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi (UC San Diego), two of ETH's original proposers, and Ryan Williams (MIT) will verify and explain it. OpenAI also claims a proof of the local smoothing conjecture in every dimension and a proof that pure Yang-Mills theory exists, part of a Millennium Prize problem. The math and computer science write-ups and Lean proofs are on GitHub; until independent experts confirm them, these are OpenAI's claims.
