Google DeepMind and Springer Nature build an AI peer review assistant

Why it matters

Springer Nature announced on 26 October 2026 a research partnership with Google DeepMind to co-design an AI peer review assistant. Per Springer Nature's press release, the assistant helps reviewers navigate manuscripts and flags areas that may need closer attention, so they can focus on specialist scientific judgement. It is built with Google DeepMind's Gemini models and helps reviewers analyse large amounts of text, charts and figures. It runs solely in Springer Nature's private, secure Gemini Enterprise platform, so author and reviewer content stays confidential. A prototype is being tested now; Springer Nature's stated approach is "human first, AI second", with expert human judgement at the centre. It is a research partnership and prototype, not a released product, and no rollout date was given.
