UK AI Biosecurity Lab: up to £300M, backed by OpenAI and Anthropic
Why it matters
The UK government is establishing the AI Biosecurity Lab, which it calls the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation: an independent non-profit, similar to the AI Security Institute, backed by £100 million of government funding and up to £200 million in company commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic. OpenAI will provide £100 million in compute and model credits plus trusted access to its models; Anthropic up to £100 million in model credits, trusted access and technical support. Initial focus: earlier detection of emerging biological threats and faster development of vaccines and treatments, with Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research as research partners. It is part of a £165 million National AI Biosecurity Initiative, announced alongside an extra £120 million for the AI Security Institute, a £60 million National Cyber Shield and a £70 million NERV Centre.
