Anthropic: fold subagents into one main agent loop
Why it matters
Anthropic's guide "Building agents: When to fold subagents into your main agent loop" (claude.com, Oct 22, 2026) says that in its comparisons across several enterprise deployments, a single agent with skills frequently outperformed both the one-prompt-for-everything design and the subagent design on quality, often at lower cost and latency per task. One customer saw a roughly 2x faster runtime with a single agent loop than with its multi-agent harness. Anthropic reduced Claude Code's system prompt for more advanced models by over 80%, partly by progressively disclosing skills and tools, and notes tool choice tends to degrade past 30-50 tool definitions. Subagents still make sense for measurable context bloat, parallel tasks with fresh context windows, or conflicting tools and instructions.
