AI agents made a Hearthstone bot in 20 days. Its stats beat the top 10
Why it matters
In the AutoTavern preprint (arXiv 2610.33845, 24 October 2026; Nanjing University and Shanghai AI Laboratory), LLM research agents built TavernGym, a full-content reproduction of Hearthstone Battlegrounds, and delivered 23 versions of the TavernAgent player in 20 days, with a human setting goals and ruling on ambiguous mechanics. On the public leaderboard's measure, the bot's last 20 records average a 1.60 placement with 80% first places, versus 2.34 and 59% for the server's ten highest-rated players together. On the paper's TavernBench, it answers 91% of play tasks versus at most 63% for frontier LLMs playing directly. Caveats: a human pressed the shortcut key the AI named; placements are estimated from rating changes over a 20-record window; one game, one patch; preprint, not peer reviewed.
