Meta investigated by UK CMA over AI use of publishers' content

Why it matters

The UK CMA opened an investigation (Oct 30) into Meta's new commercial terms, which could let Meta use content from publishers' websites for its products, including AI features, without those businesses getting a choice on if or how their content is used. The CMA is assessing whether Meta abuses a dominant position via unfair trading conditions. Meta paused the rollout (planned Nov 20) on Oct 28; no decision has been made on whether it broke the law. Meta says it committed to consult publishers first.
