Anthropic donates Agent Skills to the Linux Foundation
Why it matters
Anthropic donated Agent Skills, the open standard behind SKILL.md, to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation on Oct 22. A skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that teaches an agent a specific task, plus any scripts or reference material it needs. More than 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, have integrated it since the standard was published in December 2025, and Anthropic says 1 million skills have been published and installed nearly 280 million times. Anthropic is handing over the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain; anyone can keep using or contributing without joining the AAIF. Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI and other companies will maintain it as individuals, under a multi-company Technical Steering Committee. It follows MCP, which Anthropic donated to the same foundation, and is one of four new AAIF projects alongside OpenAI's Open Responses, Hugging Face's OpenEnv and Alibaba's OpenSandbox, bringing the foundation to 10 projects. Proposed next: versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security guidance for people who write and install skills.
